Gerard Schaefer obtained his victims easily in the early 70's, as he was a Martin County deputy who tied a noose around the necks of his young female victims and hung them from the "Devil Tree."  He also bound and raped them.  If they weren't dead yet, he shot them with a .22 weapon.  While in prison for his crimes, Schaefer's luck ran out when another inmate barged into his cell, slashed his throat, and stabbed him in both eyes.

The case cast a harsh spotlight on the Department of Children and Families, which approved their adoption. Eventually one twin was allegedly beaten and murdered by her adoptive father. The state is seeking the death penalty.
